The Mimesis collage series is a series of self-portraits by artist Maryna Brodovska, created in 2022 during Russia's war against Ukraine.
The artist asks herself: how to remain when it seems that all your life and the world, that surrounded you – crashed in one day? How to preserve personal and artistic identity in times of cruelty and chaos, times when your physical existence is in a daily risk? Should I care about it? Is it important? I believe that it is. Doing these new self-portrait series in a joyful way is my personal opposition to the madness of the war. I exist, even without a physical body.
Art remains a powerful tool against death. And if it can't save this world, it can definitely save the artist.
